Our knowledgable guide talked us through the different types of cheese mad in Ireland, from sharp goats cheeses, to creamy buffalo mozzarella.

Then it was onto the Galway food market, which is open at weekends. We visited Boychik Dougnuts, where doughnuts are freshly fried. Fresh batter was dropped into hot oil, then tossed in sugar, they were amazing, very difficult to let them cool down enough before scoffing them. We also tasted Sushi form the lovely Wa Cafe. The highlight for me were the beautiful Connemara Oysters, eaten straight form the shell – incredibly fresh!

The next stop was Griffins Bakery. This bakery has been in the same Galway family for 5 generations. We met the owner and baker himself and he introduced us to his famous ‘Conger’ loaf of Bread. The story behind this came from an encounter he had with a dangerous Conger Eel. The eel attacked him while scuba diving. After his convalescence he created this massive loaf in the bakery. It takes pride of place on the counter every day. He says he delights in sawing the bread up – imagining it’s the dangerous eel that he met, and getting his revenge on it each and every morning. We also tasted some incredible danish pastries and cakes.

Our tour ended in the quintessential Galway Pub Tigh Neachtains. Here we sampled a few different local brews, including Buried at

Sea a chocolate stout from Galway Bay Brewery, This was a rich and complex stout with warm notes of chocolate – I’d never be so adventurous with my stout choices, but I’d highly recommend trying this one if you see it. To go with the stout there was some delicious cake from Cupan Tae, which is a lovey tea shop located across from Spanish Arch. The courgette and lime cake was sensational.

You’ll get to taste a lot of different things on the tour, so you can expect it to take the place of a meal – come hungry, there’s plenty to eat! Bring a coat and walking shoes, you’ll get a foodie map of Galway and a goodie bag to take home.

It gives you a great flavour of a huge range of restaurants and producers, so you can go back and visit your favourite later on.

A great way to spend a couple of hours in Galway City whatever the weather.

Galway food tour Galway Food Tours take you on a 2 hour journey around Galway City.
