A rainy day and books go together like wine and cheese! Another benefit of a rainy day is that bit more time and space to explore and pursue art – a treat we definitely don\u2019t give ourselves often enough.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span>These two local stores are right next to each other – so you can hop from one to the next (and then pop in to Upstairs Downstairs<\/a> for a lovely coffee).\u00a0 C<\/a><\/span>lifden bookshop is filled with treasures, with a wide range of books available – including works by local writers and Connemara-focused books. You will find plenty of options for the young readers in your life too. We love it here.\u00a0 <\/span>The Whitehorn Gallery<\/a> is that beautiful Mediterranean white corner store, with the baby blue awnings that we all know and love. This is where you will find the works of Ireland\u2019s best contemporary artists, as well as international artists. This is where we can happily whittle away some hours on a rainy afternoon.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span>You can also check out the <\/span>Lavelle Art Gallery<\/span><\/a> – with a mix of Irish and international artists<\/span><\/p>\nClifden Station House museum\u00a0\u00a0<\/b><\/a><\/h2>\nClifden has played a role in two of the world’s most historic events, in the past hundred and fifty years.\u00a0 Marconi set up the first transatlantic wireless station here, ushering in the age of radio. Alcock and Brown (crash) landed their tiny plane here after the first ever transatlantic flight. In addition, Clifden Railway station was the terminus of the Connemara Railway, one of the oldest railways in the world, trains ran from 1845 to 1935. All this and more is covered in this lovely little museum. You can finish up the day with some tea and home-baked goods in their cafe or tea room.
