5 Connemara food trucks for summer 2023
There have been some delicious new additions to the Connemara food truck scene this past year, and we couldn’t be happier. Connemara is a perfect place for a weekend getaway to sample your way through delicious food and with some unique options to choose from.
The influx of food trucks here over the past few years has been an amazing boost to the already thriving foodie scene and it is the perfect addition to the Connemara summer experience.
Here are some of our favorite Connemara food trucks that you should visit this summer:
1. Fadó
Does anyone else agree that a fresh and handmade wood-fired pizza might just be one of the best meals out there? You can imagine our delight when Fado Pizza came on the Connemara food truck scene!
This wooden food truck was hand-built during lockdown, and is a true labour of love that we are delighted about. You can find this pizza-heaven located in the Shanaheever Camping and Caravan Park – meaning it is accessible from the town – and if you are camping on-site this would be the perfect evening meal with a few beers and late-night chats.
Oh yes, I can smell the bubbling cheese and the distinct aroma of crisp wood-fired pizza dough filling up the summer months. The Fado pizza will be our order – tomato, goats cheese, candied walnuts, pesto, parmesan and prosciutto; yes please!

2. Good Stuff
Roundstone’s latest culinary addition is the Good Stuff food truck, and it lives up to the name! This is run by two Connemara locals – Lily from Recess and Johnny from Roundstone, and supporting local never tasted better!
Cheese toasties really do hit the spot after a day on the beach, or after a long bike ride – and these are the type of toasties that have that perfect balance of lightly browned crispiness of the buttered bread, with just the right level of thickness and melted, oozing cheese. For the plant-based traveler you can grab their vegan toastie – which includes homemade pesto and caramelized onions! The options don’t stop at toasted sandwiches – you can try their fresh, colorful salads, or homemade cakes and they serve excellent coffee using Calendar Coffee beans.
Be sure to check this one out on your next trip to Roundstone – it is a popular spot for a reason.

3. Connemara Food Experience with
Dooncastle Oysters & Handsome Burger
No trip to Connemara is complete without sampling the local, fresh seafood that this region is famous for. Dooncastle Oysters is a hot topic amongst the Irish foodie world recently – having received a John and Sally McKennas’ Guides award for 2021, a visit and nod from chef Donal Skeehan and several mentions in national media – including one of the top 101 places to dine outdoors from the Irish Independent.
Chefed by local Derek Heanue the menu is not limited to oysters (but you should try them) – it includes mussels, seafood salad, crab claws, scampi and seasonal chowder.
Joining this fishy haven onsite is the famous Handsome Burger – voted Ireland’s best burger. Founded in 2017, by best friends Rory and Cathal, these lads have traveled Ireland spreading the love through juicy hand rolled, locally sourced meat patties that just make you smile!
Definitely worth a stop as you pass through Kylemore.

4. Misunderstood Heron
Misunderstood Heron has fast become a favorite among locals and visitors since its arrival a few years ago. It is certainly one of the original Connemara food trucks, run by Leenane native Kim and Reinaldo from Chile.
A regular weekend outing of ours would be a hike on one of the local mountains, then we make our way to Misunderstood Heron for some sustenance along with those spectacular views of Killary Fjord and surrounding mountains. This is truly a unique Connemara experience, and a wonderful opportunity to sample food from a consistently creative and evolving menu, as well as Cloud Picker coffee with a side of epic baked goods.
Although their menu is ever-changing, you can expect options inspired by local, fresh produce, and foraged, seasonal Irish foods. Picture fresh brown bread sandwiches filled with succulent chicken, homemade pesto, local salad leaves and relish. Think pastries, falafel or local mussels – there is something for everyone.
This is the place to go, with time to sit, relax and enjoy the magic scenery that this foodie hotspot includes – and be sure to take a snap at the #misunderstoodheron bench!

Off the beaten truck –
*The one that got away
Although this food truck was built and brought to life in Connemara by Wicklow native Laura and her partner Jack (one of our instructors from last year), alas we have lost her to Crone Woods in Wicklow for the season – be sure to stop by for a coffee and sweet treat when adventuring on the east coast, Laura is great for the chats and her cakes are to die for!
