Why we surf: Stevie Doherty
We are a team of surfers who have been practicing, learning and teaching this incredible sport for several decades, between all the Real Adventures guides. We asked each of the team what they love about surfing, how it is a positive influence in their life and what they learned from those early days of beginning on this lifelong surf journey.
1.How did you first get into surfing?
I went on a trip to an outdoor center in Achil Island as a teenager, and that was where I was first introduced to surfing.
2.Do you remember how it felt when you were first learning to surf?
For me it felt amazing from the first time, it is a challenge that I fully enjoyed. I took some lessons and I got some help from some friends that surfed regularly, so that helped me a lot.
3.What kept you coming back and motivated you to keep learning to surf?
Every single session was extremely enjoyable, it was always different and I felt great during and after each surf session.
4. What does surfing offer you in your life right now? (Mentally, physically, etc)
Surfing can cover all realms, both mentally and physically, from total calm and relaxation to challenging. It is something that no matter how often you go back to it, there are always new levels to challenge yourself or learn from. This combined with the fact that it is just pure fun and keeps me always wanting more.
5.What is the best thing that surfing has given you?
Outside of the fun factor, there are also so many aspects such as the connection with nature, the fact that you can surf energy in a liquid medium, and you can encounter fear or elation all within one session. I love that you can push yourself to be challenged as much as you want. I have had an incredible amount of good times with this sport!
6.What would you say to beginners or those wanting to take up surfing?
Go for it, and taking some lessons in the early stages will definitely speed up the evolution of your learning process.
7.What have you learned from teaching others to surf?
That it is something everyone seems to enjoy.
8. What is something that people think about surfing, that may not be accurate or true?
Surfing is not just about standing up on a board, it is about catching and riding a wave in any form.
9.What is your favorite wave?
Whatever one that I am on.
10. If you could sum surfing up in three words – what would they be?
Playing with nature!
