A drink with Danny
What is your favourite activity to teach?
My favourite activity to teach would be Coasteering, it’s a relatively new activity in Ireland but is rapidly becoming very popular. It involves traversing along the inter-tidal zone incorporating some jumps and swims into the route. The inter-tidal zone is rich with life from crabs, star fish and seabirds and all can be seen while Coasteering. On a Summers day in Connemara Coasteering with Real Adventures is the best way too spend it!
What do you do now the season has come to a close?
I am currently preparing for my final year of a degree in Outdoor Education. Even though the season has ended I continue to try and get out and enjoy the outdoors as much as possible!
What is your connection to Connemara?
From being born in Galway I have always lived close to Connemara, it has fantastic places to surf, kayak and walk. After working with Real Adventures for two seasons i’ve developed a strong connection with Connemara and the people that live there.
What activities do you do in your own time for fun?
During my own time I try and get out into the outdoors as much as possible! The winter in Ireland brings great waves and water for the rivers. If it’s not possible for me to get out to surf or kayak I try to stay active by swimming or running.
What is your greatest memory in the outdoors?
Surfing at sunset in Lahinch with good friends last summer sticks out as one of my greatest memories. Sometimes the most simple things are all you need!
What is your most miserable memory in the outdoors?
My most miserable memory is my first experience of a night navigation while doing Mountain Skills training. Visibility was poor the entire time and the wind was strong, my boots were wet within the first hour which made the rest of the hike fairly miserable! I believe we learn a lot from experiences like these.
What is your scariest moment in the outdoors so far?
My scariest moment so far would have to be out in surf that’s too big for my abilities. It can make you feel quite small when a big wave is coming at you. That’s why I try to continually improve my skills so I handle more advanced conditions.
