Sea Swimming in Connemara: Best Beaches, Directions from Clifden & Local Coffee Spots
Connemara is one of Ireland’s most magical sea-swimming regions — turquoise coves, white sandy bays, and wild Atlantic edges. As someone who spends most days on or in the sea, here are my top swim spots (not in order) with directions from Clifden and the best nearby cafés for warming up.

Why swim here?
Dog’s Bay and Gurteen are side-by-side white-sand beaches with sheltered, calm water and stunning clarity. They are ideal for relaxed swimmers and families.

How to Get There (from Clifden)
- Take the N59 towards Galway
- Turn right onto the R341 to Roundstone
- Continue 17 km into the village
- Drive 5 more minutes to the beaches

Eyrephort (Clifden)
Why Swim Here
A peaceful, sheltered bay just outside Clifden. A local favourite for quiet dips and gentle swimming.

- No facilities — bring all essentials
- Car park with space for about 10 cars
How to Get There (from Clifden)
- Follow the Sky Road (west)
- After 5 km, turn left for Eyrephort
- Continue to the end of the road

- Ideal for strong swimmers also fine for beginners on calm days

- Seasonal port a loos and small/medium car park
How to Get There (from Clifden)
- Take the N59 to Letterfrack
- Continue through Letterfrack village
- Turn left toward Renvyle/Tullycross
- Follow the coastal road to Glassilaun
Travel time: ~35–40 minutes

How to Get There (from Clifden)
- Follow the R341 towards Ballyconneely
- The beaches appear on your right-hand side
